Mother's Day Myth-Busting

This year Mother’s Day falls on Sunday, May 13. Seating is limited, so make your reservation for Mother’s Day Brunch at LINCOLN online at Open Table or call us at (202)386-9200 today. Here’s some fun FACT and FICTION about Mother’s Day that’s sure to liven up your Mother’s Day party!

FACT: The 28th President of the United States, Woodrow Wilson, made Mother’s Day a national holiday in 1914. His greatest accomplishment: this, or negotiating peace in the wake of World War I? Ask your Mom.

FICTION: “Stop cracking your knuckles – you’ll give yourself arthritis!” Despite what Mom said, studies show that cracking your knuckles will not lead to arthritis. A relationship was discovered, however, between knuckle-cracking, hand swelling, grip strength, damage to ligaments surrounding the joints and dislocation of tendons. Yikes! Myth or not, sounds like heeding Mom’s warning is a great idea!

FACT: According to the National Restaurant Association, Mother’s Day remains the most popular holiday on which to dine out, surpassing even Valentine’s Day in popularity. (Hint: make your reservations now!)

FICTION: “Eat all of your carrots and you’ll be able to see in the dark!” According to Mom, this might have been gospel truth. But studies show that eating carrots will improve your eyesight only if your diet is already lacking in Vitamin A. Mom wasn’t exactly wrong!

FACT: Jessica Dunker, president and CEO of the Iowa Restaurant Association says: “Moms love restaurants. Not only do restaurants provide a much-deserved reprieve from cooking at home, they also provide a celebratory atmosphere.” LINCOLN was a Washington Post Editor’s Pick for Best Late Night Happy Hourappeared on NBC4 news, is featured in Wine Enthusiast, held several star-studded private events, and even hosted wedding receptions at our convenient location in Northwest Washington, DC this year. So treat Mom right and choose a place specializing in celebrations and private parties of all kinds.

FICTION: “If you keep making that face, it will freeze that way!” We’ve all learned by now that this is probably not true. But repeatedly frowning can cause wrinkles, so again, Mom knows best!

FACT: In a recent study, over half of Moms surveyed would choose a restaurant as the place to celebrate Mother’s Day. The study also indicated that restaurant gift cards and certificates are a top gift pick for moms, with one in five saying this is their preferred gift. Closely related fact: if Momma ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy.

FICTION: “You can’t have any coffee – it will stunt your growth!” Coffee and caffeine are probably not related to osteoporosis, as was once believed. But Mom warned against caffeine and sugar for good reason, so young and old would do well to heed her warning and keep it in moderation.
